About us
The museum's objective is threefold: To remind of the presence of Canadian Air Forces on the former military airbase Baden-Soellingen for more than 40 years, their contribution to the Allied Defense of Central Europe, their co-operation with the Deutsche Luftwaffe within NATO and to show in an exemplary way the technical development of military aviation.
The initiator of the “German - Canadian Air Force Museum Association”, Herbert Lienhart (*1953 - +2009), charged himself to document and to keep up the memory of 40 years of Canadian presence on the former military air base Baden-Soellingen for future generations. His main objective was to keep up the good relations and friendships with the Canadian friends.
After an initial period of establishing the museum over three years, the Association could open the museum on September 29, 2002. The former aircraft shelter E8 at the south side of Baden-Airpark had been restored and refurbished.
Thousands of thousands of working hours had been completed by the association’s members. Also, thousands of Euros had been collected to accomplish the mission. Only thanks to donations and material provided by many friends and numerous companies a museum could be created at the Baden-Airpark.
The exhibition offers numerous artifacts of the Canadian era military installations, equipment, souvenirs, photographs and documentary material. Focal points are aircraft of the Canadian and German air forces such as Canadair F-86 Mk.6 Sabre, Lockheed F-104 G Starfighter, Fiat G-91, a unique prototype, the Rockwell Ranger 2000, a jet trainer candidate for the US Joint Primary Aircraft Training System as well as various piston- and jet- aircraft engines. The aircraft and engines have been painstakingly restored by the association.
At this time, a Lockheed T-33 is being restored and will be on display by mid 2010. The exhibition is
complemented by a collection of a wide variety of military model aircraft and a multimedia show of aviation slides and videos. Visiting the museum should not only be informative but also distracting. The museum’s shop provides aviation literature, model aircraft and decorative antique aircraft parts.
The cafeteria offers refreshments in an original yet comfortable environment.
